Swallow in a Dream

The swallow has widely varying interpretations in different parts of the world. The ancient Greeks considered the swallow a sign of bad luck, while the Romans considered it highly auspicious. The Chinese considered it a symbol of courage and initiative, but the Japanese thought it a sign of unfaithfulness. It has always been considered unlucky to kill a swallow. John Dryden (1631-1700), the English poet, wrote: "Perhaps you fail'd in your fore-seeing skill, For swallows are unlucky birds to kill." (The Hind and the Panther, part III) The swallow is usually considered a sign of spring, since the birds return to the same spot they left from each year after their annual migration. Probably the most famous example of this are the swallows that traditionally return to the Mission of San Juan Capistrano in California on March 19th every year. To dream of a swallow is a sign of great happiness, children, and pleasant activities.
